UNLESS YOU’RE SHAVING with a top-notch wet or dry electric razor, you’ll need to first apply a product to prep the skin. There are really only two options: pre-shave oil and shaving cream. For the smoothest, most irritation-free shave, opt for both in order. However, the latter is a non-negotiable unless a red, sliced-up face is the look you’re going for. No judgment?

The truth is, your shave is only as good as the cream you use because the right shaving cream cushions the skin, reduces irritation, and locks in moisture for added comfort afterwards. It also helps the razor glide smoothly, preventing nicks and tugging.

Most importantly, it turns a tedious routine into a clean, refreshing experience. But not all shaving creams are created equal—some barely protect or soothe at all. To save your skin the abuse (and potential scars), I’ve rounded up the best options worth trying.

Jackfir The Classic Shave Cream

Jackfir The Classic checks every box I look for in a shaving cream. Its ingredients are clean, its scent soothing, and the formula protects the skin from irritation and cuts. Simply put, I got one of the closest, smoothest shaves I’ve ever had with this cream.

The creamy lather cushions the razor perfectly while aloe, cucumber, and panthenol keep the skin calm and hydrated. The scent is invigorating and woodsy, thanks to natural oils like cedarwood, vetiver, and chamomile instead of synthetic fragrances. This also makes it safe for sensitive skin without being entirely scentless.

On top of its long list of at least 70 percent organic ingredients, it even comes in sustainable packaging made from recycled materials. I generally shave with a safety razor for my face and a cartridge razor for my body (or when traveling), and Jackfir was perfect for both.

It’s slick enough that it never clogs up the blade, but thick enough to keep my skin protected. This is all on top of prepping the skin while also locking moisture in post-shave.

I have dry skin that’s prone to shaving irritation, but the combo of panthenol and bisabolol kept my face feeling calm before and after the session. You also don’t need to use much to cover your entire face; barely more than a nickel-sized amount will do the trick. The only downside to this stuff is that it’s over $35, but given how long it lasts and how great it performs, it’s well worth it.

Pros

  • Made with at least 70 percent organic ingredients
  • Container made with at least 50% recycled plastic
  • Incredible woodsy scent
  • Safe for sensitive skin

Harry’s Shave Cream (2-Pack)

Image for the large product module

The razor you use isn’t solely responsible for shaving irritation. For many, simply switching to a gentler, more skin-friendly shaving cream will go a long way in preventing bumps and redness. You won’t find a better option than Harry’s Shave Cream, which is no surprise coming from what I dubbed the best skincare brand for clean-shaven men.

This cream packs powerful natural ingredients like eucalyptus oil, mint oil, and aloe vera, which work together to soothe skin and reduce irritation. It’s free of parabens, sulfates, or other common irritants, and its formula is equally thick and silky to protect and smooth skin. Best of all, it could double as the best value shaving cream at only $8 a container.

Pros

  • Under $10 a container
  • Paraben- and sulfate-free
  • Safe for sensitive skin
Cons

  • Thicker cream may clog razors with close blades

The Art of Shaving Sandalwood Shaving Cream

Image for the large product module

I’ve been cutting my own hair for over a decade, so I really only go to barbershops for one thing: a close and luxurious shave. But this shaving cream makes me wonder if I could eliminate those trips altogether. It’s the closest you’ll get to the barbershop experience with an incredible, soft lather that feels like a hot towel wrapped around your chin. Sure, it’s a little pricey and best applied with a brush—which I count as a positive—but it’s far less expensive and time-consuming than making a trip to your local shop.

Pros

  • Soft lather feels like a barbershop shave
  • Invigorating sandalwood scent
  • Thick, rich formula
Cons

  • The most expensive option on this list

Bevel Shave Cream

If you’re prone to razor bumps and burning like me, this cream will feel like a godsend thanks to its rich and smooth lather that’s packed with ingredients that care for skin. The aloe vera and shea butter deliver deep hydration, keeping your face calm and protected while helping to prevent razor bumps and irritation.

The pair also works together to calm inflammation, moisturize, and create a protective barrier that helps prevent razor bumps and post-shave irritation. White tea extract then adds that clean, refreshing feel I always look for in a shaving cream. It’s soothing, nourishing, and bump-free.

Pros

  • Formula reduces inflammation
  • Protects against razor bumps
  • Rich lather
Cons

  • Smallest container on this list

Gillette Rapid Foaming Shave Gel

I don’t use cartridge razors too often, as safety and electric razors tend to leave my sensitive skin less irritated. But if I’m traveling or in a hurry, I’ll turn to them—and rarely without this shave gel from GilletteLabs. The rapid foaming is as advertised, thickening in seconds for quick application.

It gives that fresh feeling once it hits your face before the razor even touches your skin. While it’s listed as having a cedar wood and orange peel scent, I rarely catch too much of it. But I prefer that, as I’d rather rely on my cologne for fragrance.

Pros

  • Great for quick shaves
  • Thickens in seconds
  • Gives cooling

Atwater Smooth Target Shaving Cream

Image for the large product module

I implore you to use a shave oil in addition to a cream to minimize irritation as much as possible; however, if you really don’t have the time or desire to, use this. Atwater’s shaving cream is designed to pull double duty, preparing the skin before the razor touches it and protecting it throughout the shave. As a pre-shave, its blend of hydrating oils helps soften stubble and create a smooth, conditioned surface.

During shaving, ingredients like vitamin B5, vitamin C, argan oil, and coconut oil work together to cushion the blade, reduce friction, and keep the skin nourished. This combination leaves my skin feeling as calm and moisturized as it’ll get without using a pre-shave oil. Plus, it’s completely unscented, so it’s safe for even the most sensitive skin.

Pros

  • Works as both a pre-shave oil and shaving cream
  • Unscented, safe for sensitive skin
  • A little goes a long way, which helps the 5 oz container last
Cons

  • Thick formula can clog razors with closer blades

Dr. Squatch Easy Glide Pine Tar Shave Butter

Image for the large product module

Dr. Squatch’s shave butter feels more like a creamy lotion than shaving cream, allowing the razor to glide smoothly across the skin while it also moisturizes. Despite how that sounds, it never clogs up my blade—even when I use a safety razor. The trio of natural hero ingredients, shea butter, murumuru butter, and macadamia oil, is rich in vitamins and fatty acids that deeply hydrate, soften, and smooth the skin.

Together, they create a nourishing barrier that locks in moisture and helps reduce irritation for a more comfortable, soothing shave. The lotion-like texture takes a couple of shaves to get used to if you’ve traditionally used thicker shave creams or foams, but the feel of your skin during and after is immediately satisfying.

Pros

  • Moisturizes, hydrates, and protects skin
  • Texture feels more like a lotion, which is great for sensitive skin
  • Subtle pine tar scent that’s great for layering
Cons

  • Lotion-like texture may take some getting used to

What to Consider

What’s the Best Type of Shaving Cream?

Shaving cream is often used as a catch-all term for several products that prep and protect your skin while you shave. There are three main types, and the right one depends on your razor, your skin type, and your personal preference.

  • Shaving Cream: This is the classic option. Shaving cream whips into a rich, foamy lather that cushions the skin and protects against razor burn with maximum glide. It’s the right choice for traditional wet shaving, offering comfort and protection that works best with safety or cartridge razors.

  • Shave Butter: Shave butter pairs well with cartridge or electric razors, providing a creamier, sometimes clear texture that allows for precise shaving and better visibility. It offers deeper hydration and a smooth glide to help minimize friction and irritation.

  • Shave Gel: Shave gel is ideal for cartridge razors, forming a slick, light layer that enhances the razor’s glide and control. Its more translucent, often cooling formula delivers a quicker, cleaner shave. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you may benefit from using a shave butter, as these tend to be more moisturizing than traditional creams.

What are the Best Ingredients to Look for in Shaving Cream?

If your shave is only as good as the cream you use, then the cream is only as good as its ingredients. Shaving creams often include soothing ingredients like aloe vera, which calms irritation and helps the skin stay hydrated before and after shaving. Shea butter is another popular one, as it provides rich moisture that softens hair and improves razor glide, reducing friction during the shave.

Many formulas also contain vitamin E, an antioxidant that nourishes the skin and supports repair after shaving. Then there is a slew of natural oils and other vitamins to keep an eye on, like vitamin B5, vitamin C, argan oil, and coconut oil that hydrate, soothe, and prevent post-shave irritation.

How Important is the Size of My Shaving Cream?

How often do you shave? That’s the most important question to ask yourself when considering the size of your cream. A larger tube offers better value and lasts longer, especially for daily shavers. Smaller sizes, on the other hand, are ideal for travel or testing a new formula before committing. You’ll also want to consider what you shave.

I rock a beard most of the time, so I only shave for touch-ups on my neck and cheeks. Plus, I rarely shave body hair and stick to trimming. Because of this, I can often get away with a smaller tube. But if you’re clean-cut or shave large parts of your body, you’ll want to look to larger options.

How We Selected

We’ve been testing razors since 2018, and naturally, every swipe meant testing the shaving creams that make them glide, too. For this update, I considered old favorites and new offerings from brands I trust to find the best-performing creams on the market. After over a year of testing (and plenty of shaves), I narrowed dozens down to 15 top contenders. I then evaluated or reevaluated each formula for cushion, glide, price, and how well it prevented irritation. After all that lathering, these seven shaving creams earned the title of best in 2026.
